Africa’s Food Crisis – Worsening of Nigeria’s Nutritional Woes

By June 30, 2022August 9th, 2022No Comments

During the Biafran War in 1960, over a million Nigerians died of starvation and scarcity of nutritional items. Almost half a century later, Nigerians may face another severe food shortage due to political unrest and security concerns in some parts of the country. With the region’s resources significantly impacted negatively due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the mismanagement of public goods by political elites, many individuals, families, and communities are struggling to care for themselves.

Alarming Statistics

The African food crisis isn’t a new phenomenon. One can even call it the African epidemic due to the deep-rooted systemic challenges affecting virtually every sector. Despite this dreadful record, the region is again at risk of facing its worst food crisis. According to OXFAM International, a global movement of people fighting inequality to end poverty and injustice, over 27 million people are currently going hungry, with the total tally expected to increase to 38 million – the worst in the region’s history. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing global recession tying the hands of world leaders, it’s up to private organizations to offer help.

Increasing Food Security

The deadly combination of the food crisis and food insecurity has catapulted Nigeria and other African countries into decades of underdevelopment. The socio-economic downfall could also have profound regional and global consequences. So, strategic investments in development and food security are needed in this time of need to lay a solid foundation for improvement.

The Bottom Line

Many Nigerians, especially those with limited or no access to resources, need continued assistance to fight the alarming circumstances. Divine Hope Mission is working to ensure that the people of Nigeria, especially those living in isolated villages like Umume Obodoukwu, are provided with food supplies, proper healthcare, and occupational and educational training. We aim to ensure that deprived individuals, families, and communities are empowered to care for themselves. Get in touch with us and join us in the efforts.
