The Annual Tavern Day celebration is an event that the town of Burlington in Connecticut and its surrounding communities eagerly anticipate every year. The community event usually occurs in September. The event took place at the historic site of the Elton Tavern building and the Burlington Town Green. According to the Burlington Historical Society, “the Elton Tavern building, which is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1810 by Giles Griswold and has served as a private home, public house, and inn during the next 164 years until the town of Burlington purchased it in 1974.” The Burlington Historical Society believes that the building “has become known as “Elton Tavern,” largely due to the long occupancy of Romeo Elton, a distinguished resident of Burlington.” (http://burlington-history.org/home/our-history/the-tavern). Linked with the Elton Tavern, the annual community event has become themed over the years as “Tavern Day.”
The Tavern Day event is a cherished tradition and an annual celebration that brings together community members from different works of life. This year’s festival occurred on Sunday, September 18th. The perfect Fall weather condition of the day made the celebration an excellent outdoor outing. During the Tavern Event, different drinks, including beer and wine, were showcased, particularly those produced by the residents. The attendees of the legal drinking age had an opportunity during the event to satisfy their taste buds.
Additionally, other activities and things made the day special, including food courts offering the opportunity for attendees to taste food from some of the area restaurants. Also, some of the local farmers displayed and sold locally produced food at the event. The cake & ice cream truck was at hand for everyone to enjoy. The kids had their fun zone, where they enjoyed their bounce houses and other kids’ friendly activities. The day also featured entertainment shows, live music, community groups’ exhibits, and a reenactment of historical trends. The Lewis S. Mills High School March Band also graced the occasion by displaying their arts and talents.
The Divine Hope Mission was one of the organizations that participated in the Tavern Day Event. While enjoying the beauty of the Tavern Day celebration, the Divine Hope Mission team shared the organization’s mission with potential supporters. The attendees who had questions about Divine Hope Mission had their questions answered. At the same time, those who sought information received the information they needed.
