Often referred to as the Giant of Africa, Nigeria has the continent’s largest population and the best economy compared to other African countries. The country also holds cultural significance, with over 230 ethnic groups and over 380 languages. Despite all these strengths, Nigeria has one of the weakest healthcare systems in the world. With poor sanitation and hygiene facilities deteriorating with time, public healthcare issues could worsen. Let’s shed some light on the Nigerian healthcare crisis.
Why is the Health Crisis in Nigeria in a Precarious State?
Nigeria is facing a toxic mix of problems that are having detrimental impacts on the country’s healthcare system. The country faces malnutrition problems, corruption perpetrated by political elites, fake drugs, and insufficient financial investment. Moreover, the government’s efforts to improve healthcare have been abysmal. Lack of proper investment and adequate incentives and remuneration for healthcare workers continue to exacerbate the problems to an alarming level.
The Alarming Situation in Nigeria
The claim that Nigeria is witnessing a healthcare crisis is only the tip of the iceberg. The statistics paint an even more grim picture, with an average of 20,000 Nigerians traveling to India and more thousands traveling to other parts of the world yearly for medical assistance. Additionally, WHO reports that almost 10% of newborn deaths worldwide occurred in Nigeria last year. Citing a UNICEF report, Minerva Strategies (a team of professionals with diverse experiences that work with nonprofits, foundations, and values-driven companies to create positive social change) writes that more than 70% of the under-five deaths in Nigeria are caused by preventable or curable diseases like measles, diarrhea, pneumonia, etc. Apart from these recorded statistics, there are many unreported diseases and deaths daily due to the worsening situation in the healthcare system.
The Impact of Disease Spreads
With the country being an attractive hub for commerce, it is naturally at risk for the spread of contagious diseases like flu, dengue, and COVID-19. This further exposes the meager healthcare system in the region. Despite these problems, there hasn’t been an effective emergency response by the government to improve the overall system.
